Death is only the beginning

October smiled and took a seat

The other months just sat there grinning

Their comprehension incomplete

You see, without me, you would flounder

Winter, summer, spring would fall

Without my brief encounter

Your seasons could not exist at all

I am the closing of a chapter

I know just what needs put to rest

For the seasons that come after

Without my touch you'd be hard pressed

To tuck the elements in your blankets

So they can multiply below

Preparing future banquets

Under your warm blanketing snow

And spring, without my pruning

And cutting back the weathered stem

Your trees and flowers would stop blooming

Blossoms breaking the soil would end

Summer, you reap the biggest blessings

You simply put it all out on display

You're like the salads dressing

The season where everybody gets to play

Yes, death is only the beginning

Everything starts and stops with me

Now I'd better get to trimming

Before all the leaves drop off the trees
