The Lost Heart

A Poignant Ghazal by Foroughi Bastami

By heasb001Published 2 years ago • 1 min read

Foroughi Bastami, a lesser-known Persian poet of the 19th century, masterfully captures the essence of human bewilderment in love and fate. His poetry often reflects deep introspection, longing, and the helplessness of the heart in the face of its own desires. This ghazal speaks of a restless soul, unaware of its own heart’s struggles, caught between destiny and personal choices. The poet surrenders to the idea that even the wisest cannot escape the perplexities of love.

🌿 My heart has fled, yet I remain unaware of its plight.

No one can unveil the secrets of their heart’s endless night.

Why should I blame others for the sorrows I bear?

For all that befell me was woven by my own heart’s snare.

So still I sit, lost in silence and despair,

Even the eyes of fate no longer glance my way with care.

What use is seeking wisdom, what path should I explore?

For even the wise are left helpless before their hearts' endless war.
