The Importance of Love

A Poem

Born one place and raised in another

Just following the wind where it takes me

As I travel the journey they call life.

Knowing one thing for sure

I was born to love.

I live a life more fulfilling than anyone would ever know.

A life filled with the sweet sound of laughter

and smiling faces that come in all different colors and races.

Oh how I love to see those smiling faces.

Where kindness comes wrapped up with a bow and giving it to someone who needs it most occurs quite frequently.

And giving a warm blanket of love through open arms happens too often.

A life where looking out for one another is what I strive for.

And doing nothing out of selfishness but-

In humility regard others as more important than one’s self exists in this self centered world.

Stepping outside their comfort zone in order to help others to the point where it becomes the comfort zone.

A place where joy can be seen everywhere is the place I want to live.

A place where no one feels alone anymore and they know they have a shoulder to cry on.

A place where people share in the happiness and the sadness of others lives so that maybe someday someone will do the same for them when the time comes.

A place where so much love is shown everyday that it becomes a healthy force of habit.

I am someone who loves myself for who I have become

through this journey the wind has taken me.

And though the journey may have been rough

It has made me stronger.

And here I am eighteen years young

still

having so much more love to give.

The Importance of Love

I wrote this poem in my English class my senior year of high school. We were required to write in the style of Walt Whitman and be inspired by his poem "Song of Myself." Hope you enjoy my story.
