The Haunted Barn
They said don’t go, that place ain’t right
but I was drawn there late one night
The barn stood crooked, slats all bare
a roof that sagged like breathless air
The gate swung wide with no one near
I should’ve left, I felt the fear
But something whispered, soft and slow
a voice too low for wind to throw
The hay was black with mold and rot
a pile of bones sat in one spot
A boot, a cap, a rusted chain
and something moaned just like in pain
I turned to run, the door slammed tight
a shadow moved against the light
It wore no face, just empty skin
and scraped its limbs like broken tin
I backed away, but not too far
It knew I’d parked my car ajar
And if I left, it’d follow fast
It doesn’t care for those who last
Its hands were cold, its smile was wide
it whispered things I keep inside
I begged, I swore, I tried to scream
but all I made was half a dream
Now folks still say don’t go alone
That barn’s not just old wood and stone
It takes what’s left when hope is thin
and seals you like a jar within
I walk by day, but not quite whole
It kept my name, it took my soul
And if you hear a soft reply
Just run. Don’t knock. Don’t ask it why.
A Virginia sweet was I until that night
it took me twice whispering “it was nice”.
Then when it was over it threw me out.
I was raped by evil there was no doubt .
I didn’t tell I move well away.
what he did I will remember till my dying day.
I now fear the lights going out
Afraid he will find me without a doubt.
