The Gypsy Knocked On My Door

A gypsy knocked upon my door.
I’d never seen her there before.
She smiled at me beneath the moon.
And said she wouldn’t stay till noon.

She had dark hair and gentle eyes.
She looked at me with some surprise.
She carried things from place to place.
And had a lovely smiling face.

She told me she had travelled far.
She’d followed roads beneath each star.
She said she’d never planned to stay.
But something brought her there that day.

She sat beside me for a while.
Then looked at me with such a smile.
She took my hand and read my palm.
Her touch was gentle, soft and calm.

She said that love would come to me.
She said that love was hard to see.
I looked at her and wondered why.
She kept on looking in my eyes.

She moved a little closer then.
I wished that night would never end.
Her perfume filled the room with light.
And everything just felt so right.

She said she had to leave before dawn.
She kissed my cheek and then was gone.
I watched her walking down the lane.
And wondered if I’d see her again.

Sometimes I hear a knock at night.
I wonder if she came in sight.
That gypsy woman from before.
Who came and knocked upon my door.
