The Guilt Behind Her Shadow

They followed her through streets that swallowed light,
their footsteps stitched like shadows to her name;
but guilt grew teeth and hunted them at night,
and every window whispered back their shame.

Her face appeared inside their cups of rain,
her footsteps echoed underneath their bed;
the moon became a mirror filled with pain,
and every star repeated what they did.

They chased her shadow, but the shadow turned,
and showed them all the fear they made her wear;
their hands became the ghosts of bridges burned,
their eyes found frightened footprints everywhere.

Now guilt sits waiting underneath the door,
they cannot follow her without seeing more.
