The Grumbling Voice Within
A Poem on Self Doubt
Grumbling thoughts with my head
Can't you taunt me outside my bed?
I know I should do more
And I know my results are poor.
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Can you please fill me with less dread?
My cursor blinks as you scream
Aren't we supposed to be a team?
Grumbling thoughts within my head
You make it impossible to get ahead.
I type away my free hours
Knowing I'll never get my flowers
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Will you stop reminding me that my work goes unread?
I want to learn and grow my craft
But your berating waves trap me in my raft.
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Do you want my career dead?
I fail to see the strength in my words
And all I see are underlined turds.
Grumbling thoughts within my head
I'm clutching onto the final thread.
Of pursuing this writing life
Should I accept your jagged knife?
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Why can I only see red?
I'm angry and ashamed
of the image of me you framed.
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Will your negativity ever be fed?
I am in constant mental warfare
With you and your carbon coded malware.
Grumbling thoughts within my head
I want us to break bread.
So we may settle our quarrels
and one day wear a green crown of laurels.
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Have you been listening to what I said?
I'm tired of avoiding the work
to prevent you from being a jerk.
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Do you feel like I was misled?
Please, share your objective
Because all I see is defective.
Grumbling thoughts within my head.
I think it is time that you fled.
For I am the one in charge
And I'm throwing you off my barge
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Do you think I should do something else instead?
Because you cease to exist
When you are dismissed
Grumbling thoughts within my head
Is it time to make your deathbed?
You are getting so quiet
Thanks to my mental diet.
Grumbling thoughts within my head.
I will bury you within my shed.
And enjoy the hush
From my mental mush.
