The Ghost Girl at Samlesbury
They say she’s seen near the chapel wall
not often, and never when called
just a flicker where light won’t stay
a girl in white who lost her way
It happened long before we were born
she loved a lad her kin had sworn
they’d never let the two be wed
so someone saw to it he bled
They say she ran, too soft to fight
they locked her up, she lost the light
died alone or lost her mind
depends on which tale you can find
Some reckon she still waits out there
where floorboards creak and no one’s near
and now and then when the hall goes still
there’s breath on glass and sudden chill
Not much else, just stories passed
from cleaner’s mate or one who asked
and if you go and feel a sway
don’t look too hard—she fades away
