I am a tree that grows arms.

I am a branch that you break.

I am a broken piece of us.

(The rings in me you see.)

(The holes in me you make whole.)

(The nothing in me you have something.)

Because I am all of you.

And you are all of me.

On the bluff where we stood tonight,
under the fireworks display,
we each looked up and thought
our spirits were cut from a million emeralds,
our innocence plain.

I took my medication today.

I took the fireworks from you.

I took the display.

(You put it on in my darkness.)

(You put it in the dark.)

(You put it where we cannot go back.)

Because I am without you.

And you are without me.

Our shoulders rose and fell
like a gospel song had us in our grip.
We waded into the waters of our eyes,
and ships went down irrepressibly,
sonar clear, still finding their way home.

I am the ash in me.

I am the ash in you.

I am death.

(Until that do we part.)

(Until life do we start.)

(Until always do we end.)

I hear you forever now.

So, shake the timbrels and allow.

See, something in our hearts
beats a half-second faster,
impelled by baptism and grace,
pointing us toward exits marked neon promise,
and lighting up the whole damn sky.
