The Fear Of The Unknown

End of life, Death, is my biggest fear

What is it about Death

About the end of life,

That I fear the most

Is it the Afterlife?

***

Humans greatest fear

That of the unknown,

Death is the biggest

As there is no knowing.

***

Death brings about

Questions of our purpose,

Why are we really here

Is life a mere circus?

***

Where do we go

Do we no longer exist,

Is there anything out there

Does our conscious just drift?

***

Only one way to know

But then there’s no return,

Like or lump it

There’s no about turn.

***

Do we come on back

At some predestined time,

Oh boy I hope not

I’ve paid for my crime.

***

Other than the unknown

Wondering if we still exist,

I fear the dreadful pain

People feel when we’re missed.

***

I don’t handle the loss

Of a loved one at all,

The pain is excruciating

My back against a wall.

***

I don’t want to be

The cause of this pain,

My boys will be devastated

There’s nothing to gain.

***

The more I think

There’s no plus side,

Death may be natural

But it’s life’s downside.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
