THE ENVELOPES
Mom’s way
*
We each have our own way of saving,
Should an emergency jump in our way.
I remember mom and her envelopes
And what she’d stuff in them on payday.
On each one she wrote the reason:
Groceries, utilities, rent.
In a small pad she kept in the drawer of the hutch,
Was a log of all that she spent.
There were no things like checking accounts.
Everyone always used cash.
Many meals consisted of pasta,
Sometimes she’d even add hash.
If mom were alive, she’d be 104
But her system is still working today.
If it’s not in bank, it can’t get spent,
Or foolishly get withered away.
Yes, I use mom’s method of saving.
With my envelopes placed in a box.
Labeled: taxes, computer, miscellaneous things –
All stacked behind heavy locks.
Each month I add a little bit more
To the envelopes for each special goal.
When an item comes due that I saved for
My checking account won’t pay the toll.
