The Embers of Youth
A Reflection on the Passage of Time
In the embers of youth, we once burned so bright,
A flame of energy, a fire of light.
We ran through fields, chased after dreams,
With laughter ringing and happiness it seems.
The days were long and the nights were short,
And we felt as though we could conquer all sorts.
Of challenges and obstacles, we were never afraid,
For the fire of youth, in us, would not fade.
But as the years go by and we grow older,
The fire burns low, no longer bolder.
The days go by and the nights grow long,
And we realize, youth is just a song.
It is a song that we must all sing,
A sweet and fleeting thing.
And when its final notes have been sung,
We must accept that our time is done.
But though our youth may have passed away,
Its memories remain, to light up our day.
And in those memories, we find solace and peace,
For they are the embers that will never cease.
Often I think of the beautiful town
That is seated by the sea;
Often in thought go up and down
The pleasant streets of that dear old town,
And my youth comes back to me.
And a verse of a Lapland song
Is haunting my memory still:
‘A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.’
