the dream of knowing

that which I cannot

...

beginnings in life

much like in dreams

are unremembered

mysterious

...

but

...

the further back in time

my mind travels

the less I believe

in any of them

...

though

...

by beginning

I do not mean my birth

or beginnings of life on earth

or even the birth of the universe

...

rather

...

In the Beginning

the vacancy preceding true origin

the universe imagined

before energy or matter

...

and The

...

will that commands

all into being:

let there be life

and death

...

in the now

...

let there be dreams

and in those dreams

all sorts of intangible things

like hope, resolve, meaning, love

...

for those

...

are the things I understand

even though my flesh

is corrupted by age and time

I believe in something more

...

I believe

...

thy heart is true

I believe in us

if not forever

than for a very long time

...

this I know

...

our life together is tangible

we do not remember our births

but we remember

the birth of us

...

I remember

...

you walking down the aisle

in a cloud of white lace

the roses you held

humbled by thy tender grace

...

Helen

...

the face that launched

a thousand ships

would have turned crimson

with envy had she beheld yours

...

your features

...

lit by the afternoon sun

through the window o' the Rose

my heart pounding in my throat

fearful I would awaken from this dream

...

our life

...

unfolding together

as if written in the stars

not to say we did not struggle

or did not fight day and night

...

for we

...

were guilty of all that and more

and spake many things

we now regret

and did not always speak what we aught

...

and yet

...

my mind wanders

fourteen billion years backwards

and further beyond

to beginnings unfathomed

...

within the void

...

where imagination

and science can never go

to answer what none can answer

where only faith dares tread

...

and yet

...

I wish to believe that wisdom

lives at the cosmos' edge

and take small comfort

in the dream of knowing

...

that which I cannot....
