The Day My Trolley Took Off
It nearly landed me in jail

The Day My Trolley Took Off
Today I went to Asda,
With Phil beside me at the shop,
But as I wheeled my trolley out,
I thought I heard a pop.
I stopped and checked the wheels,
But nothing seemed amiss,
Then down the hill my trolley went,
With all my shopping in it.
The trolley crossed the busy road,
And turned into a street,
And knocked an old man sideways,
As it rolled across his feet.
He waved his walking stick at me,
And shouted in dismay,
I said, don’t blame me, mister,
That trolley ran away.
He pointed to a garden,
And said, it’s over there,
My eggs had landed on a man,
Who sat in his deck chair.
His shirt was full of egg yolk,
His trousers were a sight,
He looked at me and shouted,
This trolley isn’t right.
I said, go back to Asda,
And tell the manager there,
I’ve lost a box of eggs,
And you’ve got egg upon your chair.
He started smiling slowly,
Then laughed and shook his head,
Come on, we’ll fetch your shopping,
And get you home, he said.
We laughed until the tears came,
At the mess we’d made that day,
He said he’d claim for cleaning,
And the eggs that flew away.
I never saw him after,
I was too embarrassed to call,
And as for those poor broken eggs,
I let it go, that’s all.
