THE DAY I LET YOU GO
I held onto your memory,
For longer than I should,
I kept believing one day,
You’d finally be good.
I remembered all the promises,
You made when you were here,
The words you said so easily,
That I believed sincere.
I waited for your message,
That I thought would come one day,
I hoped that you would miss me,
And finally choose to stay.
But days became like weeks then,
And weeks became like years,
I slowly stopped expecting,
To see you through my tears.
I blamed myself for losing you,
And wondered what I’d done,
I thought that if I’d tried more,
Perhaps you’d never run.
I kept looking for the reasons,
And searching through my mind,
For something I had missed before,
Some warning left behind.
I wished that I could change it,
And take away the pain,
I wished that I could hold you,
And have you back again.
But slowly I grew stronger,
And started seeing clear,
I couldn’t keep on waiting,
For someone who wasn’t here.
I learned that love can hurt you,
When you give it all away,
And sometimes letting someone go,
Is how you find your way.
I packed away the memories,
And let the past be gone,
I cried one final time for you,
Then carried myself on.
Now when I think about you,
I don’t feel lost or blue,
I simply thank you for the lesson,
And all that I went through.
