The Colors of 38 Years
A letter to my husband on our anniversary
Dear Randy,
You watched
as I walked down the aisle
in a white dress of anticipation
Children anxious for our dreams to come true
Believing
The ritual of marriage provided possibilities
Barely adults with
tightly clenched fingers
our pale hands turned crimson
"I do," sparked happy tears fused with fear
Consciously,
Together,
We accepted our new life with
positive expectations
harsh truths
Desire painted our world with
rainbows of hope
colors invaded daily habits
glowing yellows of new days
Grey fogs of uncertainty
black from obligatory losses
reminding us
that beginnings open the doors to
exhilarating adventures
Inevitable ends
Life’s reality
Splattered moments with blood red pain
faded by brushstrokes of laughter
Accentuated
a tint of promise
hues of pleasure
A tapestry of memories assembled chaotically
splattered with passion, memories, and reality
Knowing
our masterpiece is only complete when life is finished
Thank you for the years,
Your loving wife,
Brenda
