The Color to be You

By: Esther Insil Kim

Red. The color of my heart, thoughts, and emotions.

The center of our being, from which our heart beats.

Four chambers in our hearts, least I had three.

I had a hole in my heart and underwent open heart surgery.

When they stitched up my heart, they left a scar on my chest.

One that I wore like a battle scar,

I had fought a battle and won.

Red. The color of fear, of anger, but most importantly,

Love.

Love knows no color.

Yellow. The color of the sun that brings life to us all.

The color of innocence, of youth, of childhood.

We all want to touch it but it is lightyears ahead;

Much like light itself. It is here one second and gone the next.

The color of sunflowers as they bloom after the rain.

The color of my Grandma’s hat.

The color of a dress that Belle wore in Beauty and the Beast.

It evokes in us what used to be, and who we are becoming;

Our past, our present, and our future.

Yellow. The color of hope, of inspiration, but most importantly,

Love.

Love knows no color.

Black. The color of the night sky as it brightens up the stars.

The color of strength, of majesty, and awe.

The color of a man’s briefcase as he goes to work;

A symbol of pride, of power, and prestige.

The color of the streets we drive on, the buildings we work in;

The shoes that we wear, and the eyes that we look into.

It’s the color of mystery, of influence, and unity;

It brings all things together into one.

Black is the truest color, that brings all colors into one.

But there is a greater color, and that color is love.

Love has no color.

It is part of us and we are part of it.

Red. Yellow. Black. Blue.

We all have one true color;

The color of Love.

The color to be True.

The color to be You.
