The Candle I Lit Yesterday

The spark or the memory?

By Syed Arabi KhaliquePublished 9 months ago • 1 min read
The haunted memories

The words I had written 9 years ago on a whim,

Still reside in the dampened, yellow pages unseen.

Few shall see my emotions unveiled,

And funny they may seem, albeit true and pale.

The sentences I had woven 9 years ago in a muse,

Survive still in the brown notebook much used,

But the thoughts I had today vanished into thin air,

And the songs my mind sang disappeared where,

All songs, thoughts and feelings go into the abyss.

In the abyss lies my destination, in lieu of things amiss,

Of the love lost to time, of emotions forgotten and more,

Of the nights I spent in company of family and friends,

Of the memories that haunt me in its serene beauty and mends,

The pain of my broken heart, strung together with a wish

The hope of a dream, an imagination, an eccentric niche.

But no solace I shall find in the abyss, or kingdom come,

For memories are times gone past, and they never will come.

Just as the candle I lit yesterday,

Give me no warmth or light today
