The Bitter Truth

Learned the hard way

A day dawned in unwelcoming light,

A heart has broken, torn to shreds,

A night of sheer agony best forgotten,

The sun shadowing her fear and dread.

***

She was forewarned,

Yes that is true,

But she needed to learn,

To see it through.

***

A tear rolls down her hot pink cheeks,

As she digests the lesson unfolding,

Her thoughts a shambles, unthinkable,

Her feelings trodden, her love withholding.

***

Embarrassed, yes to say the least,

Hurting, of course, it’s how she learns,

The plan crumbled,

While her dreams and wishes horribly burned.

***

She reaches with a forgotten hand,

Begging for the bitter truth as it is told,

Wanting the honesty regardless of the pain,

Each word heard while fiercely controlled.

***

The sound of the unheard scolding,

Bashes around her in tornado gusts,

She curls in upon her horror,

Knowing she’ll accept it, she truly must.

***

Believing she was finished, an unsavoury end,

The start of the loss and the beginning of a new,

Wandering the days of solitude and loneliness,

Appreciating the sordid state of blue.

***

Day after day regret at the forefront,

Wishing for it to be different, nothing more than bad dreams,

Sleepless nights, tears a sodden,

Painful memories and silent screams.

***

But unbeknown to her in her sorrow,

Tomorrow dawns a bright new day,

The sun does shine golden upon her spirit,

As it squanders the dark shadows forever away.

***

Her face delights with the brightest smile,

Discovering the loss was exactly as it should be,

Simplifying her life, letting it shine,

Unchaining her heart and setting her free.

***

The way forward is coated in glitter,

Stardust and moonbeams surround her soul,

She’s where she needs to be in all her glory,

The best version of her yet, her magnificence whole.

***

She realises the pain was a necessary lesson,

A temporary patch of defeat,

Allowing her future to shine with belief,

As she wakes to a new day feeling majestically complete.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

This made me cry. Yet again, here I am, with my heart broken. I just hope I can accept it as a lesson and move on

Wonderful piece. Well done, my friend.

  • How we struggle to hold onto what we know, even when it's not working & is crushing our soul. Until we can no longer deny that it's over. That horrible burden of facing the music knowing there's nothing we can do to make things right, then left alone to the bitter horrors of the night, only to find that with morning's light & the burden lifted, we are born anew. Painfully, beautifully, exquisitely captured in your phrasing, cadence & words.
