The Big Dipper

God above, thank you for

this little world and this big sky

Like a bug in a bowl, covered by a lid poked with holes

Stars shine and twinkle and even nursery rhymes know

The spoon in the sky is but a mere reminder

of the numerous miracles of this life

A picture made of light, a beacon of hope

How I love you, my constant constellation

Humanity

Oh, you,

a great and magnificent people

You who celebrate the days we were born and say bless you to sneezes

Putting together colors and fabrics and calling it fashion

You who root for other people playing sports and admire other people playing pretend

Eating food for the joy of the taste and gathering around a table to enjoy it together

You who learn other languages and who always greet with your region's slang

A kiss to end the night and a kiss upon awakening

Humanity, how beautiful and intricate

My Favorite Pen

Pen, how you deliver my thoughts to the page

With your scritch and scratch against it

Flowing seamlessly down the parchment with your fountain of drippy ink

Looping my letters with intimacy, dousing my story with character

Many imitate but no one compares

to the weight of you in my hand
