The Beauty of Motherhood
A Poem for a Friend and a New Mommy
What a graceful slipping away it must be,
That terrifyingly marvelous shedding of old skin
Sloughing off the body to make room for a new form of being,
A being that breathes with excitement and purpose.
You from before is nestled quietly somewhere inside,
Content with the eclipsing of her spotlight.
A new woman stares into a precious universe,
One that is reflected back at her
In tiny, curious blue eyes.
Sunrises and sunsets,
Supernovas bursting in a dark abyss,
Every cosmic mystery that humanity so desperately covets-
All lack profound meaning or existential significance
In comparison to the infinite beauty
That is motherhood.
