An Elemental Journey
(earth)
man climbs into craft
says farewell to solid ground
counts down to zero
(fire)
intermingling fuels
spark applied to set ablaze
power of titans
(air)
man and craft ascend
crudely shoving air aside
until there is none
(water)
man and craft descend
dangling under silken threads
until ocean's kiss

The Pod
Dale does not know what the next 17 years will hold for him, but in some cases, he knows exactly what will happen. He sits at his elegant dining room table, with a newly opened bottle of Beaujolais in front of him. Gleaming in the light of the chandelier is a shiny-black object, roughly the size, and shape of a rugby ball. He stares at it as he pours himself a glass of wine. He takes a drink and thinks back to an earlier time.

The Ugliest Building
Mark Twain called the building I work in, “The ugliest building in America.” I agree. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building isn’t the largest in Washington, D.C., but its imposing façade makes it feel like it is. I work for the Office of E-Government and Information Technology. I have a satellite office in the bowels of this monstrosity. Working in this building gives us quick access to both the President and Vice-President because they also have offices here. This access may be why I’m in this situation, or maybe it’s the project I’m assigned to, or both.
