The Anatomy
I woke to find my feelings gone,
Somewhere between the dusk and dawn,
My laughter hung upon a nail,
My sorrow floated, thin and pale.
My happiness lay in a jar,
Beside the ashes of a star,
My anger crawled beneath the floor,
And begged me not to feel anymore.
I searched the cupboards of my mind,
For something human left behind,
But all I found were hollow eyes,
And butterflies embalmed in lies.
My heartbeat sounded out of tune,
A broken clock beneath the moon,
My tears had dried before they fell,
My body's just an empty shell.
I watched my shadow leave the room,
To dance with ghosts beneath the gloom,
It wore the smile I used to own,
Then disappeared and left me stone.
The mirrors whispered, "Who are you?"
I answered, "Someone I once knew,"
But even words had lost their taste,
Like dying flowers trapped in waste.
Now silence sleeps beneath my skin,
Where all my feelings once had been,
And somewhere in my hollow chest,
A thousand dead emotions rest.
But strangest of the things I've seen,
Was not the dark or what had been,
It was the way I learned to smile,
And feel absolutely nothing all the while.
