That Girl you Choose to Really get to Know
Poetry Series: That Girl
That Girl you Choose to Really get to Know
She’s the girl with all the connections,
The one making life look easy,
The one who would get all the guy's affection,
Especially the ones who would never see me.
She’s the girl that is everyone's friend,
The one who acts as a support for everyone,
The one who doesn't have to try to be on trend,
The girl who's invited to everything because she’s fun.
The girl who sings like an angel,
and who was praised by the voice she has,
But was always secretly seeking appraisal,
Embarrassed by her talent but desiring the demand.
She built her image to be a friendly face,
Even if the relationships ran shallow,
She fears of being replaced or erased,
Desperately avoiding feeling hollow.
She covers her body with meaning,
Replacing experiences with ink,
Controlling the design instead of dealing,
With how being one within herself isn't really in sync.
She is troubled by past experiences,
But is adamant on not being a victim,
But it's playing a part in who she is,
And the control of the ink is addictive.
She’s the girl you think you want to be,
Thin waist, long legs and gets the attention,
The society’s interpretation of what is beauty,
And what you should look like to fit in.
But nobody sees,
All the unwanted attention,
Only the good she receives
Never her own struggles of reinvention.
Nobody sees the struggle behind her mask,
Only the compassion people show her
After passing out in class.
But how many of those people, ever look further.
She gives herself away,
Identifying herself by her friends and talent,
But if you were to take a survey,
The concern she gives, verse gets is unbalanced.
But she almost prefers it that way,
Because she lives by hearing the applause,
Because at the end of the day,
She doesn't want others to see her flaws.
Because as soon as they do,
She's afraid they will leave,
Move on to someone new,
Because she herself doesn't see her own beauty.
She's the girl that you would think has the world in her hands,
But if you take time to be closer,
There's more to her that expands,
When you choose to really get to know her.
