TEARS ON MY PILLOW
A yearning to be just loved

TEARS ON MY PILLOW
How do you heal a broken heart,
When night comes round and the tears all start?
I put my arms round my pillow tight,
Pretending someone holds me tonight.
I kiss the place where your lips would be,
And wish there were arms reaching back for me.
I can get the stay, but where is the love?
I whisper my question to somewhere above.
Are you here because this is where you belong,
Or has leaving been put off for far too long?
I want to be more than someone beside you,
I want to be someone you turn to and hold too.
By morning I rise and straighten my bed,
With all of those words still filling my head.
I go through the day, keep it under my hat,
Make somebody tea and stop for a chat.
But nobody sees what the night puts me through,
Or the pillow I hold when I wish it was you.
And still I dream that the warmth will be real,
A sleepy embrace and a quick kiss to steal.
To talk about nothing, to laugh at the rain,
To reach for your hand and feel yours again.
To wake in the morning and know you are there,
And know it is love that is keeping you there.
