It’s the fresh pfft-click of a fresh can that makes me realize

I would take any drug, fictional or otherwise, to taste the sound

Of your laughter, uncontrolled and high itself, once more.

You are the greatest drug I've ever taken and I can’t remember

What it’s like to taste you, to be high on that adventure.

.

Feed me the sound of a smile wrapped around a cigarette.

Give me the unmistakable symphony of your little fun,

The small death that shudders through your bones.

Let me taste the sound of you unravelling because that is

Exactly how I dream of remembering you, of feasting on you.

.

I want to remember how your tears tasted when you knew

This would have to die and turn to decay like spring flowers

In the relentless heat of an overly dry, excessively cruel summer.

I want to taste the wet leaves mingling with the cherries,

Dessert and the silent fight that always followed it.

.

The southern wind used to carry our secrets to the storm

And we, like little moths hopelessly drawn to the flame,

Watched as the lightning struck fear into our hearts.

What did we do but catch the thunder in our teeth and dance

With the untimely rains drenching our sins under the light?

.

I want to stop tasting goodbye in the cherry fizz of summer.

I want to just…put down the last set of words about this.

Nostalgia can die but I think I’ll give her a very good funeral.

So that’s what I want then, at the end of all of this with you.

I want to lay my head down and forget I ever loved you.
