social commentary
There's a rich history of poetry serving as social commentary, intended to inspire calls to action.
Sacred Beauty
she'll look at herself in the mirror and pretend as her beauty knows no limits, but as she wanders out into the world, her morning thoughts of her reflection are then shrouded by competing personalities, men who undress her with their eyes, not seeing any true value in who she is, and as she passes me by, I look past the beauty, I don't undress her clothing to get her body, I look in her eyes so that I may undress her mind, to see her soul, and capture a glimpse of her true self, for I too know how she feels, I wake up with the confidence of a lion and when I wander this world I become small and fragile to the smallest insult about any imperfection of my body, and we both head back to our homes, we know that today is over, tomorrow is a new and the cycle repeats.
