Swimming Free

Pain is like an ocean

grief are the waves

the ocean is always there

the waves come and go

at times so strong

it could take you away

it could consume you

until you are drowning

you cling to little hope

that awaits at the surface

but you are beyond it; sinking

you want to let go, give in to the pull

allow it to destroy you

but there’s still a spark

in the depth of your soul, fighting

it will not let you give in

you cannot give up

so you fight through that wave

until you find your way to the surface

you can breathe again

you can look beyond the waves

your destination still undetermined

the future unwritten

and that is the beauty

of the ocean

It’s always there but you can choose

any direction

even when another wave

comes crashing

the waves come and go

but you are not drowning

the pain consuming you

is no longer controlling

you can swim

ride through the waves

until it is over

and there is peace again

you are swimming

in your ocean

you will be okay
