I still taste the salt of the sea on my lips

And feel the ripples of the gentle waves on my toes

As we listened to the cries of seagulls and watched the passing ships

It was so easy to forget all our woes

You held my hand and whispered, “I hope today never ends”

A content smile curved the corners of my mouth

We were lovers and best friends

Together, watching the birds above fly south

The migrated birds heralded cooler autumn days

The end of our beautiful summer was drawing near

And I worried, listening to the song of the bluejays

When winter comes, will you still be here?

But as the leaves fell you still held my hand

And I knew we’d have plenty of summers lying together on the sand
