Staying Above Water
Finding the will to keep swimming

The fire in your lungs
Extinguished with your last breath
A harsh battle lost
I imagine you
Floating in celestial air
Free from pain on Earth
I’m not brave, Mama,
I am tired, fragile, lost
Drowning without you
Pulled under, eyes shut,
I hear you whisper, “Just breathe,
Then live, love, and swim.”
