Speaking Rules

A poem about going back in time, sort of.

If I could meet my younger self,

I'd punch her in the throat

And hope

That the pain would linger.

Maybe it would keep me

Silent.

Maybe I wouldn't spill

Pieces of myself into the gutter,

Into the satisfied narcissists,

The lovers of my future.

I should break my fingers,

While I'm at it,

And stop every one of those

Late night, hopeless, pathetic

Texts that have for so long

Made me suffer my own

Humiliation.

It is humiliating.

I shared too many words

Without ever realizing

There was a word count.

So if I could vanish backwards,

I would punch myself in the throat

And hope that the pain

Would scare me into silence.

Because then it would be

A choice.
