Soulbound
Sometimes you have to take the risk and jump — if it's right, it's beautiful. And if it's not, you learn something along the way.

A caribou rests on the cool, flat tundra,
Where the sound of a bell disturbs her slumber -
A tickle in her chest, a shiver down her spine.
This fleeting warmth, this longing, passes by.
She lies on the land, so plain and bare,
Her eyes open to a red string, no thicker than air.
She pulls at the thread, so soft and slight,
But it clings to her chest, pulling her tight.
With every tug, a flutter, a strain -
A whisper of something she can't quite name.
The string hums low, like a forgotten song,
A bond so delicate, yet it feels so strong.
She shakes her fur, she shifts in the breeze,
But the pull remains, a quiet unease.
Her heart stirs with a soft, steady ache,
A tug at the thread with each breath she takes.
No matter how far she stretches away,
The string tugs her back, as if to say:
You are not alone, though the world feels vast,
Bound by this thread that will forever last.
The string stretched out, endless and wide,
A thread that linked her, far and inside.
She wondered, What force connects us, dear?
Her mind, once closed, now wide and clear.
She saw, at last, the life she'd known -
A path that never felt like her own.
In the weight of those antlers, so awkward and tight,
She'd never felt right, not in the light.
But the string had sparked something deep inside,
A glimmer of hope that she could not hide.
At the end of it, a new life she'd find,
A future not bound, but free in her mind.
She began to follow this endless string,
Hoping it would lead her to what would make her sing.
She walked for ages, until her feet grew sore,
But her mind was set - she needed more.
The farther she went, the string pulled strong,
As though the distance itself had been wrong.
An urgency stirred deep within her chest,
To find the end, to put her soul to rest.
She pushed through the pain, each step more sure,
Until she reached a cliff where the air felt pure.
The ocean below crashed on jagged rocks,
And for a moment, she paused, heart caught in knots.
The string tugged harder, her heart raced fast -
She knew, in that moment, this was her path.
She trusted the string as it whispered near,
Jump.
With eyes closed tight, she ran, no fear,
Her breath held still, as if suspended in air.
Then, the world turned quiet, as she leapt,
Into the vast unknown, her heart unkept.
The water swallowed her whole with a splash,
And she felt a change - a shift so brash.
Her body transformed as the waves hit her back,
A new form emerged, free from the track.
She looked through new eyes, so wild and wide,
Her soul cried out - I can swim! with pride.
Fins stretched from her sides, so smooth and bright,
A tail so powerful, she felt light.
She accepted this form, for it felt so true,
But the string still pulled, as if it knew:
Come closer to me.
She swam through the sea, the pull so near,
Her fins grew stronger, her purpose clear.
She swam so far across the sea,
Following the call, to find what it means.
But as she swam, doubt crept in -
This form, she felt, might not be her skin.
She loved the water, but she longed for air,
The grass beneath her feet, the earth so fair.
She swam and swam, until the end appeared,
By the shore of a land, unknown and clear.
The string still pulled, wrapped around her heart,
An urgent feeling, urging her to start.
She crawled onto the beach, tired and sore,
She had come so far, yet still unsure.
She felt her form shift once again,
And the start of her new journey then began.
A tail so red, fluffy and bright,
Teeth so sharp, ready to fight.
She swiftly ran, weaving through trees,
Pounding through fields, she truly felt free.
Following the call of this little red string,
Her heart almost fell out of her chest with a sting.
As she ran through the forest, she felt she was close,
But this form wasn't quite right, something she'd never chose.
Her paws, though swift, felt heavy and wrong,
Not quick enough for the chase she longed.
She could feel the pull, a deep inner knowing,
This form was temporary, and she kept going.
The string tugged harder, leading her on,
Until at last, it ended, where the shadows had gone.
A tail flickered behind a rock, swift and sly,
And she knew, with a start, it was time to try.
She followed the tail, eager and fast,
But the creature she chased was always ahead, never last.
Through the thick of the trees, they darted and raced,
Until the animal ahead turned, and she felt her pace
Slow and steady - her paws shifting beneath,
From fur to pads so soft, with claws that were sleek.
Her tail grew thinner, more agile and lean,
And she realized - this was where she'd been.
She felt her body change as her movements grew light,
The fox was no more - now a cat in the night.
Her form felt so right, the most her she'd been,
She chased the red string, now a part of her skin.
Through the forest, with paws so quick,
Her heart beat in rhythm, steady and thick.
The string pulled her forward, she followed its call,
Until the shore appeared - before her, a wall.
The sun began to set, painting the sky,
And as she reached the beach, her breath came in a sigh.
There, by the water, a figure stood,
The fox-cat girl, a being misunderstood.
The girl stepped forward, the air warm and sweet,
And in her eyes, the world felt complete.
With a knowing smile, she whispered with grace,
"What took you so long, dear? I've been waiting to see your face."
The fox-cat girl walked closer, her paws light on the sand,
Her eyes steady and kind, as she took the other's hand.
Together, they stood, watching the sunset's golden glow,
As the world around them seemed to softly slow.
The warmth of the day faded into the night,
And as the last rays flickered, the air felt just right.
She stood there silently, her gaze fixed ahead,
But the fox-cat girl tilted her head.
Slowly, her face began to shift and change,
Her eyes widened, and her form rearranged.
Soft whiskers sprouted, and her nose took on shape,
Her fur darkened, her body agape.
"You're attached to me," she said with a curious tone,
Her voice soft, like a whisper of wind that had grown.
The girl beside her turned, her heart filling with knowing,
She smiled, and then, her voice began flowing.
"Yes, we always have been," she said with a sigh,
"I had to help you see it this time, you and I."
The fox-cat blinked, her expression confused,
"This time?" she asked, as if she'd been bemused.
The cat girl nodded, her eyes full of grace,
"Through every life, we've always shared space.
No matter how far, no matter the span,
The red string will pull us back, again and again."
The fox-cat girl's heart beat faster, a stir in her chest,
She understood now, what she'd felt in her quest.
The love was deep, more than it seemed -
A bond beyond time, beyond what she'd dreamed.
"We've loved each other in every lifetime, you see,
Through every form, we've been meant to be.
In this life, and the next, and the one after that,
Through every cycle, we'll always come back."
The fox-cat girl felt the warmth, the pull,
Of something eternal, something beautiful.
In the few moments they'd shared, her soul knew it well,
A love that transcends, a love that could swell.
Though they'd only known each other for such a brief span,
The connection between them was more than any plan.
It was the kind of love that time couldn't confine,
That reached through the ages, like stars that align.
"You and I, we've always been here,"
The cat whispered, her voice full of cheer.
"Through every lifetime, we've loved and we've fought,
And no matter the distance, no matter what we sought,
We will always find each other, through this thread,
Until the end of time, until we're both dead."
The fox-cat nodded, her heart full of light,
Her love for this being felt pure and bright.
She understood now, the journey she'd made,
The twists and the turns, the forms she'd traded.
And as the last of the sunset dipped low,
She realized something she'd always known.
The red string was love, eternal and true,
And with every pull, she'd find her way to you.
