And I wonder if you dream of me at night because you won’t stop haunting me in the depths of my sleep…

And I ponder whether I might ever see you again.

Why’d the universe send me something so devastatingly beautiful, hypnotic even…

Like the flowers that grow just a little too high, right outside my reach.

Her memory circles without end.

Without beginning…

Stuck in a time loop.

Forever entrapped in my mind.

Here’s how it goes:

I’m wrapped in her arms on the dance floor.

Her sea-blue eyes gently graze over me.

I whisper softly, "I want to keep you forever,"

Knowing full well I’ve created a soul contract.

Knowing full well this won’t end well.

I don’t recall her response—just that she pulls me closer.

Her warm cheek presses against mine.

I feel so utterly happy… and pained at the same time.

We step apart, my eyes following her sparkly silver dress spinning with her hips,

her arms swinging overhead, enamored with that moment in time.

It’s the coldest day of the year.

A bone-chilling mist breathes across my face.

I feel her fingers interlace with mine as I lead her down her street.

She says to me, "Our souls are connected, forever."

I quickly remark, "Careful what soul contracts you create."

She lets go of my hand and wraps her arms back around me.

Oh, how I wish I could stay here…

Oh, how I wish we’d never met.

Months pass.

Our friendship becomes chaotic.

I want her.

She doesn’t want me.

She meets someone—someone who’s caught her interest.

I confess how I feel.

She doesn’t understand.

“We’re just friends though… soul friends,” she says.

Soul friends.

“I can’t keep doing this—I need space.”

And that’s all it takes.

A single text.

She refuses to communicate again.

Nightmares of her eating my soul out of my body.

It’s been months since I last saw her.

But she won’t leave me alone in my sleep.

And perhaps, she has what I so terribly need back.
