Underwater Hometown

Trinidad Lake Dam, with Fisher's Peak in the distance (Author's photo)

Below Fisher's Peak

Somewhere beneath the water

Lies my Dad's hometown

**********************************************************************

Author's note: Just outside Trinidad, Colorado, the dam is a beautiful place to visit and view the mountains.

The dam flooded the old towns in the mid 1970s.

People who lived in the valley below Fisher's Peak sold their homes and moved. Some of the old houses were actually moved to Trinidad, where many old Sopris family members still live.

My grandparents had settled in Sopris and my father and his siblings grew up there. The Shablo family is now scattered about, some still living in Colorado, some elsewhere in the country.

Past Sopris residents still hold reunions at the park.

Remembering Sopris:

You can clearly see on the map where Sopris used to be. (Author's photo)
