Something We Have Always Known

hungry for a kind of freedom we have never known

I kiss the hounds

to remind them

that no matter how

wild and unkempt

they become,

they will always deserve my love,

even on nights when they stir

beyond my wakeful hours,

hungry for a kind of freedom

we have never known.

*

I let them kiss me

in remembrance

of the very same,

that I am entrusted

with their love,

even on nights when the drain clogs,

and ants creep

single file through withered sealing

strips around old window

panes, and I am restless,

sick for a kind of cleansing

we have never known.

*

The umbra kisses us

to memorialize impressions

resembling love

that come of digressions

from pride and ego

after longing souls

go wandering beyond the

daylight, bathe in obscurity,

and are showered

by immortal dirt,

digging for something

we have always known.
