So Far Away, Near

A Presence

By Earl W. PearlPublished 5 months ago • Updated 5 months ago • 1 min read

We buried my best friend today

He always made me laugh

It tickled me, the things he’d say

He’d split my sides in half

But something soon came over me

I knew not what it was

Had no idea what it could be

Was feeling all abuzz

Looked to my left, then to my right

Saw nothing untoward

But something’s somewhere out of sight

It couldn’t be ignored

Then blew a breath upon my neck

The sound came from behind

I turned around to quickly check

And almost lost my mind

His picture sat there on a shelf

A candle in his hand

This picture I had shot myself

Then after, had it scanned

A nagging thought was there to stay

Was strange without a doubt

Recalled his statement made that day

“My wick is burning out”

We knew that he would soon be gone

From cancer in his blood

The joke though that he’s leaving on

It landed with a thud

The freaky thing I came to know

I now know what’s to blame

That candle in the image, bro

No longer had a flame

fact or fiction
