Snacking on Sugary Bread
My sweet memory of simple moments
Those were the times when nothing much was had.
Misty mornings in spring, hot flashes of summery bread,
Memories of a time when chocolate was luxurious,
When oranges, bananas, and salamy would put one into debt.
We had white refined sugar, the crunchy miraculous type,
We'd sprinkle it on half-dried bread
and off to the low rooftop we'd climb.
My cousin and I, under the flimsy shade of the cherry tree,
Snacking in our deliriously delicious simplicity,
What our grandmother's closet would provide.
Just that sweet intoxicating feeling of whiteness,
Dissolving, imbuing itself deeply into our childhood souls.
The bread was simple, white bought bread, from the corner shop,
The type everyone was grateful for and no one would dread.
Together, the sugar on top of the crumbly half-old slices,
Would seem like a pure treat, on a hot day in summer.
We are two kids dreaming on top of the low rooftop,
Watching the horizon with hope, making up stories of better days,
Adventures and confectionery trips we couldn't afford.
No money was akin to just being in the moment,
Playing with what nature had to offer,
At the edge of the cornfield, we would play hide and seek,
We'd climb the old apricot tree and get bitten by spiders,
But our souls and imagination were ours to keep.
Then back to our magical treacly sugary bread slice -
Because when we could get our snack, we would be grateful,
The feeling of being full in our stomachs would be enough.
