Smoky Mountain Children

We’ll make it

She was a tough kind of girl,

climbing up the smoky mountains.

Life and promises bloomed as lilies,

especially when her Pa died young.

Determined, she would keep her siblings on track.

Walking to school,

so they wouldn’t grow up to be any kind of fool.

She worried about all the things…

that fourteen year old girls shouldn’t have to even think about.

Growing vegetables and selling roots at the mercantile.

Hard work and sweat, it all took awhile.

She kept praying,

that she and her siblings would grow up quicker.

Adult problems and leaky roofs,

were growing quicker.

They couldn’t be taken to an orphanage,

they had to continue to pretend,

that Pa was home sick in bed,

instead of buried and dead.
