Small Joy

a villanelle

Focus on the small joy!

Romanticize your life!

What else can we puny humans do? What else can we enjoy?

*

Focus on the small joy!

For horrors, they are rife

For our fragile sanity we must little white lies employ.

*

Focus on the small joy!

The sparkle of the knife

Pretend you're not the real prey, just the doe-eyed decoy.

*

Focus on the small joy!

Amidst fire and the strife

We might read poetry beside the ember-brightness of Troy.

*

Focus on the small joy!

Happy despite... despite...

Happy with the scavenged crumb, delighted with the idle toy.

*

Focus on the small joy!

Romanticize your life!

Dare I say I detest it? That I would prefer irrepressible joy?

How the audience applauds mid-pas de deux at the ballet Bolshoi.

This is great, it creates such tension in me, I want to say yes, yes we must, romanticise our lives! And also yes, yes we must not ignore the potential for more!

Ah, Ava...what away to show yourself around these parts with. While it may not stick strictly to the form...as ever, loved your brevity and this piece is beautiful. Congrats on Top Story!

That was a fun poem to read, and it reflects what I get told by people every day; even when I am not enjoying life.

So many good lines this however stuck with me: 'The sparkle of the knife Pretend you're not the real prey, just the doe-eyed decoy.' Well done and Congratulations

This hits hard. True in a way regarding the small joy, but why do I also sense anger and desperation? Bread and circuses, hm?

Deceptive and delightful! "We might read poetry beside the ember-brightness of Troy" is especially potent in my humble estimation, insofar as it neatly encapsulates the irresistible absurdity of making the best of a total calamity.

Yes, those small joys are there. A nice and new approach to a villanelle. 🦋

Oddly comforting. It's like a poetic pep talk saying, 'Hey, focus on those small joys, buddy.' 😂 love it!!!

Now they are called “glimmers”. 🤮 Thank you for saying what we are all feeling! Well, some of us anyway. Loved it!
