Sleeping with the Enemy
He has no idea that I know

Sleeping with the Enemy
I share my breath with a loaded gun
his silence louder than anyone
eyes shut, I count the ways
a heart can bruise in thirty days
He speaks in calm, in careful tone
but every word carves into bone
the smiles he gives — rehearsed, restrained
a kindness dipped in quiet pain
He dreams beside me, clenched and still
I match his rhythm, kill my will
I learn to listen with my skin
where love once lived, war creeps in
The bed remembers better years
now stuffed with ghosts and unshed tears
he turns, and I pretend to sleep
while memories rise, and mercy weeps
I wear his ring, I play the part
but he has never held my heart
I trade my freedom for the show
and love him more than he should know
A hostage dressed in satin lace
a liar’s touch, a lover’s face
and every morning, I survive
the art of keeping hate alive
For he doesn’t know I know his sin
he’s sleeping with my once good friend
the enemy that made love end
