Sitting in the Dark
The dark does not explain itself,
it waits without defence.
No speeches made, no reasons offered,
just presence dense and still.
People fear what lacks a voice,
because silence leaves no clues.
The dark refuses to reassure,
or promise it will pass.
It does not chase or raise alarm,
it simply stays put.
Like grief that sits beside you,
not asking to be named.
I asked the dark what it wanted,
it answered by remaining.
Some things do not come to take,
they come to show.
Inside it I felt stripped of noise,
no roles to maintain.
Fear arrived only later,
once thought returned.
The dark did not harm me itself,
it held up a mirror.
What I saw there stayed with me,
long after light came back.
Brightness can lie convincingly,
with comfort and disguise.
The dark tells nothing,
and that is why it terrifies.
I learned to sit without pleading,
to breathe where answers fail.
The dark does not need my trust,
only my honesty.
