Shooting Star

A distant comet intrudes upon a late night, rooftop conversation.

Did you see it too, darling?

Inching through the darkness amongst the blanketing vacuity above, a trail of light in its wake, a shooting star drifts across the horizon.

Skies above bear down upon us as we lay upon the tiled stones of the roof, passing a cigarette back and forth that drifts wisping, cancerous clouds up into the cosmos.

There, right there, between aries and pegasus — I reach up to point as you pause, midsentence.

Riveting as our talks are, you do ramble on and drive my attention towards the stars above.

A tangible place for my thoughts to go, as you muse endlessly on about the artificial pathologies and petty grievances of your life.

Can you see the comet?

The ataraxic trail it leaves in the void feels like it's sending a message, no matter how ephemeral or fleeting, that these measly discussions hold little grounding in the face of what sears into the universe, however many thousands of miles away.

I am listening, I swear!

Open your eyes, look up above and I promise, you'll understand why my mind has wondered from your tireless anecdote about your work colleagues to the arch of stardust in the sky above.

Now can you see? None of these arduous tales seem so pressing in the face of cosmic wonder such as this.
