Shimmering Fleece

First Frost Villanelle

The pre-dawn morn, to daylight bound

As hence the land lay barren still

A shimmering fleece doth blanket the ground

*

The silver ash, with crystals crowned

Where once clung leaves, in death she spilled

The pre-dawn morn, to daylight bound

*

The robin, long since flown southbound

My greeting song, the cardinal’s trill

A shimmering fleece doth blanket the ground

*

The clouded sky with snow abounds

I wrap my scarf ‘neath the frosty chill

The pre-dawn morn, to daylight bound

*

The footsteps' crunch, the only sound

In twirling mists, my breath distilled

A shimmering fleece doth blanket the ground

*

The sparkling morn, my eyes astound

As lungs inhale the frigid thrill

Of predawn morn, to daylight bound

While shimmering fleece doth blanket the ground
