She Was Exposed

For the human being that is her truth

By Colleen Millsteed Published 8 months ago 1 min read

She darkens her thoughts with the fear she feels,

That constant dark cloud that hangs over her head,

The agonising mind cripple as she believes she’s a fool,

Terrified of all she has faced and all that is yet to come,

Why? All because she’s horribly human!

**

She penalises her time with regrettable words spoken,

They continue to whiz around inside her head for days,

A laugh too loud, a secret spilt,

The ache in her chest reminds her of her stupidity,

Why? All because she had a good time!

**

Frozen in bed, struggling to rise,

Sleep wasn’t the peaceful blessing she was aiming for,

Torment rolled through her dreams as others whisper,

Laughing at her forgotten antics, the ones she can’t remember,

Why? All because she let her guard down!

**

Dread of tomorrow, of the words she’ll hear,

Fear of the unknown from her harshest critic,

Listening to the criticism spewed all weekend,

Running from the voices, arguing she’s not that bad,

Why? All because she lost control!

**

Her heart races as the memories are obsessively rerun,

Leaving her with her worst secret unknown to all,

She hid the mortifying consequences in the darkness,

Cleaning the mess of her own contrition,

Why? All because she is ashamed of her true nature!

**

Bred to be unlovable, or so she believes,

Wearing a mask in public, that for one day she lost,

Years of pretending discarded in a matter of hours,

And now she can’t face those who learned her truth,

Why? Because I repeat — for one day she became horribly human!

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

This world is so harsh and judgemental. So toxic. My heart goes out to her and everyone else that had experienced this. Loved your poem!

Hard to swallow, but a lot of ugly truths are. Well done. And I will read more.

  • You do this, too, Colleen?

It is very tough when someone goes through that. But it was interesting and I enjoy reading it.
