She can’t come home tonight
He father refuses to believe that she is dead

She can’t come home tonight
A candle burns still at night,
A beacon, soft and warm,
To guide his daughter safely back,
Through shadow and through storm.
But the winds of fate are cruel,
Their whispers cold and grim;
She cannot come, her voice now stilled,
Her light forever dimmed.
Yet still the candle flickers on,
Its glow defies the gloom;
A father’s love, undying, waits,
Though she lies in her tomb.
For in its flame, a memory burns,
A hope he can’t let go,
A daughter gone, yet ever near,
In the candle’s tender glow.
His wife wakes up, her voice so soft,
She snuffs the candle out.
“Let’s sleep,” she says,
“she isn’t coming home,”
Her words dispel his doubt.
In darkness now, they lie as one,
The night both calm and deep,
The candle’s glow may fade away,
But love will never sleep.
