Seeing More
Funny thing about getting older,
Nobody mentions this instead,
You spend less time chasing approval,
And more time hearing what was said.
Your eyes may search a little longer,
For words in smaller printed lines,
Yet people become less complicated,
Their patterns show in clearer signs.
You notice effort over language,
Notice absence over excuse,
Notice who appears in sunshine,
And who arrives when hope feels loose.
You stop mistaking noise for closeness,
Stop confusing charm with care,
Years remove the polished surface,
And show what was always there.
Some faces carry borrowed kindness,
Some offer warmth with hidden cost,
Age begins to draw the difference,
Between what stayed and what was lost.
You learn silence says enough,
Distance has its reasons too,
Not every door deserves reopening,
Not every ending damaged you.
The heart grows wiser not harder,
That part people get all wrong,
You simply stop handing pieces,
To places they never belonged.
You laugh at things that once hurt deeply,
You rest without the need to explain,
You understand not every battle,
Deserves your energy again.
And yes the mirror may change slowly,
Lines arrive and hair turns grey,
Yet there is something quietly freeing,
In no longer giving yourself away.
Funny thing about getting older,
The world gets smaller then more true,
Your eyesight may become weaker,
Yet your view becomes stronger too.
