Seasons d'Amour
A pastiche of Seasons of Love from the musical Rent
Eighteen million, nine-twenty thousand, six hundred minutes
We've been together for that long, my dear
Eighteen million, nine-twenty thousand, six hundred minutes
How do you measure lives entwined for thirty-six years?
********
In cuddles, in snuggles, in pebbles, in discount roses
Late night discussions, and straight up fights
Massages, or pun fights? Road trips, or silly poses?
What yardstick tells us how we've lived our life?
How about love?
How about love?
How about love?
We measure in love
********
Those mornings when we breathe in each other's scent
Those moonlit nights when the stars are so bright
The times that frustration means our “deal” has been spent
Those days when nothing ever seems to go right
In kids we didn't have, false friends who trust betrayed,
Lives we may have saved, or the money that we made?
We reach toward each other in joy or frightening pain
Back to back against the world, facing loss or fun or gain
Measure in love
Measure in love
Measure in love
Seasons of love
********
In milkshakes, and crafting, and learning, and teaching others
In jewelry, in music, empty peanut butter jars
In nightmares, in giggles, laid plans, and wishful thinking
How do you measure our journey so far?
The states that we visit and pennies collected,
Those spring break days of flying kites on the sand,
The butterflies we raised and released to the unknown,
The granddaughter we love to play with and spoil 'cause we can?
In choices that we made, or funerals we'd attend,
In stories that we share, or gifts we give to friends
Remember the love
Remember the love
Remember the love
Measure in love
********
In backpacks, and pictures, and edits, and cups of hot tea
Brook stomps, leaf crunches, and huge snowball fights
Weight gain, work pressure, or unwelcome diagnoses
Crickets and fireflies on warm summer nights
The fights to set our boundaries to keep us safe and sane,
The loans we didn't want to take but let us barely float,
The times that our neglect would drive the other one insane,
Those rides that were so magical in every kind of boat
In letters that we wrote, the times we said goodbye,
The times we almost gave up, or claimed we never tried
Seasons of love
Seasons of love
Seasons of love
We measure in love
********
In ethics, in sodas, glass beads, and pewter casting
In nuzzles, and nibbles, and afternoon delight
In crutches, car crashes, doctors, and pain that's lasting
Phone bills, long distance, or fading eyesight?
When whales were singing to the cold dark stars along the beach,
To forays in the Everglades, or rivers full of manatees
Or in the desert, staring at the mule deer within reach
Or standing on Mount Cadillac, able to view the sea?
In card games that we played, lives full of Truth or Dare,
The work we did behind the scenes and no one seemed to care
Measure in love
Measure in love
Measure in love
We measure in love
********
In diet restrictions, snowmen, and favorite foods
Museums, exhibits, and funny t-shirts
In puppers, or moo cows, or rapid changing of moods
Or relaxing where we are, just sitting in the dirt
Those nights we watched the dawn, tracked satellites in space,
Deep talks about our plans, thought it was all figured out,
Mourning shattered dreams, people gone without a trace,
Or when everything fell apart, drowning us in our own doubt
Adventures and excitement, it has been quite the ride
But I'd do it all again, if you stay by my side
Remember the love
Remember the love
Remember the love
Measure in love
Seasons of love
Seasons of love

Nice one
Meredith, this is amazing! I absolutely LOVED how you described what love is - it's the little things that count.
Wow what an impressive poem🥰
Beautiful & loved it!!!💕♥️♥️
Rent is one of my all-time favorite musicals. I heard/watched them sing "Seasons of Love" for the Tonys, went out & bought the complete cd, listened to it more times than I can count, saw the movie in the theaters, bought it on dvd, bought the dvd from the final week on Broadway & have watched both of them more times than I can count. BTW, great choice for this poem & wonderful treatment. But why didn't you sing it for us?
