Scratches and Scars

Helping me to remember

There are some moments in every person's life

Where the emotions are so overwhelming

They find a way to hide the memories of the pain itself away

They bottle up their feelings and put it in a secret place inside them

They numb themselves with drink and smoke

They distract themselves just long enough to go to sleep

And start all over the next day

Just like I can still remember the day when I turned seven

My father had bought me a bike

I rode so fast that day, I inevitably fell and cut my knee

The scar it left casts visions in my mind

I can feel the wind on my face and the abrupt fall

I can recall the fear in my heart and the pain I felt when I hit the ground

These scars exist all over my body and each one carries with it

Memories

Sometimes painful, at other; joyful

Your heart and soul contain the ones you cannot see very readily

And so you may need to take the time necessary to know yourself

They allow me to remember times I am not so fond of

But in remembering, I am able to heal and thus grow

It is as much needed for my evolution as my ability to move on from them.
