“I don’t know where my shoes are!”
“Well, go find them!”
“But I don’t know where they are!”
“That’s why you have to look!”
“But I DON’T KNOW WHERE THEY ARE!”
Mad dash to the door
At the last second,
One shoe on a foot the other in a hand,
“Put it on in the car!”
Managing to scurry in two minutes late even though
We live a quarter mile from the school.
~
Working out in the sun,
Farmers’ tans and sweaty brows
From planting, caring, harvesting,
Then wash! eat! freeze! can! in a
Mad dash to beat
Nature’s process of decay.
~
Up before five a.m.
Whispering voices pretending
To be quiet, but really
Whispering as loudly as possible
Hoping to wake the ‘late risers’.
Finally, lining up from
Youngest to oldest and walking,
Stumbling, shoving down the stairs,
Cries of glee and jumping and beaming
To the sound of merry music, the lights
Twinkling on the tree.
~
Breaking into song,
Usually from a Disney show,
Rattling off movie quotes
(Also usually Disney),
Nerd talk about favorite fandoms.
Dad jumping to his feet and
Spontaneously sweeping Mom into
A dance around the kitchen floor,
Then kissing her soundly
To the groans and chagrin
Of the young ones.
~
Stepping outside after rain to see
A double rainbow,
The scent of fresh air
So strong, the soft wind
Making all draw in a deep,
Satisfied breath.
