Sand and Fire

A poem

The sky is on fire

and so is my heart.

You make me want to burn it all.

Our cosmic connection

delusion, or karma?

When you look at her like that

her smile, my smile.

The way we dance,

it feels like the universe dances around us.

We’re fixed in an absolute point in space,

a place that shouldn’t exist.

The sky is on fire,

and I just want to burn it all.

When you touch her like that—

“Dancing is my way of expressing myself.”

We move in frantic, prosaic circles,

Unsteady swirl of dreams and hopes.

And the sky is on fire.

During those paltry one-week stretches of peace,

I keep wondering:

Are you only a leaf in my book?

Or are you the rest of my story?

If I set the book on fire,

will it burn?

You tell me I’m enough,

but then you smile at her,

and I wonder,

is the sand beneath us going to give in,

or is it the kind you mix with cement,

strong enough to hold a house,

a castle,

an entire life

beneath the flaming sky?
